Books on HTML
HTML 4 for the World Wide Web - by Elizabeth Castro is an absolutely fantastic book which is ideal for both complete beginners and is ideal as a reference book for experienced web developers. The simple writig style and visual aspect makes for quick learning, but the well structured book means that its a dodle when used ass a reference book. It covers HTML very well and CSS in quite good detail and touches on Javascript, but go for this book above any if you're looking to start learning HTML!
Books on XML
XML for the World Wide Web - by Elizabeth Castro is another cracking book by the same author as the HTML book reviewed above! Due to the more bigger nature of XML, the author has had to cut down the whole subject from what can with some books run into 700 pages, into a quite compact book of less than 300. This said all the main aspects of XML are covered and its a good starter book for anyone getting into the subject.
Books on Java
Sams Teach Yourself Java 2 in 21 Days: Professional Reference Edition - by Laura Lemay, Rogers Cadenhead is a Sams book which quickly and efficiently teaches all the basics of Java. Unlike some similar books it does not expect that you understand C++ or Object Oriented Programming or Techniques, but gives a simple and intelligent introduction to these subjects within the context of Java itself.
Java in a Nutshell - by David Flanagan is one of the O'Reilly series of technical books, this one being nearly a 1000 pages of Java. Like the others in this series they tell you nearly everything about the subject in hand, but can sometimes be a little daunting for a beginner. But as reference volumes they are fantastic and will not let you down.
